Get that fibre ready, 1080p Movies coming to Xbox Australia

Post date Posted Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 3:43 pm by Jason Cartwright |

Fantastic news today, we’re getting another video marketplace in Australia.. this time on Xbox. After Microsoft’s E3 keynote announcement that they were extending their video marketplace to markets around the world, it was unclear if Australia would be on that list. The good news is that we are !!

Current on-demand video stores include iTunes and Blockbuster On Demand are both only DVD quality. 1080p with 5.1 surround sound will certainly chew through the bandwidth so look to ISPs (Internode get on this..) to offer downloads unmetered.

The video store will be available later this year. Does this mean we’ll see an Australian ZuneHD launch as well ??

I introduction of fibre to the home will mean alot of new services will be made avaliable! We might even see some more pay tv providers out there! Bit more competition for foxtels domination!
as for the 1080p movies, i was about to buy a PS3 for blueray, but now i might hold out……should i? I never know with technology anymore. Some one should do a study on “product lifespan” from 2009 compared to 10 years ago! the results would be amazing.

Really hard to say right now, given catalogue size and pricing isn't yet announced. Also out download limits are definitely a concern. But long term, it's ubundantly clear that digital downloads are the way to go.

Blu-ray is living on borrowed time.

yea that and the creation of the DVD that holds 2000 movies!

I work for an ISP and am investigating it as unmetered. But since there is no product (and it is still a few months away atleast) don't be expecting any announcements soon.

In terms of wanting it quota free, as you have mentioned it could use a fair bit of bandwidth. Despite what people think bandwidth and backhaul isn't free. So ISPs can't keep giving more and more quota free (unless a small portion of the sale goes to them to cover the cost of backhaul).

I think there will always be people that would want a physical copy though. Relying your internet connection and movie servers won't suit everyone.

From what ive heard though, Australia only utilises 2/3rds of its backhaul cable! Big Business and industry is being hell greedy! Thats the problem!
