iPad Australia Launch

Update
The information is official, coming from a press release from Cupertino.

Mashable are reporting the Apple iPad will launch in 9 new countries on May 28th. Those countries include Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK. The wait is a little longer if you live in Austria, Belgium, Hong Kong, Ireland, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand and Singapore, you’ll get your turn at the iPad in July.

If you take a look at Apple.com.au it still says ‘coming late May’ so Mashable must have a good source. Local pricing remains unknown.

Pricing & Availability
iPad is available in Australia for a recommended retail price of AUS$629 for 16GB, AUS$759 for 32GB, AUS$879 for 64GB for Wi-Fi models and AUS$799 for 16GB, AUS$928 for 32GB and AUS$1049 for 64GB for Wi-Fi + 3G models. iPad will be sold through the Apple Store, Apple’s retail stores and select Apple Authorised Resellers.

An interesting piece of information available in the press release is that the iBooks™ app for iPad including Apple’s iBookstore will be available as a free download from the App Store on 28 May.

If the success in the US is anything to go by, the 1 million sold so far will quickly turn into 3-5 million.

It is really sleek and I think I could find a lot of uses for it despite currently getting along just fine without a laptop (although Apple wants us to think of it as an appliance, not a mobile computer). I expect it is one of those products where you go: How did I manage without it all these years… I have heard comments to that effect from TWiT etc, and I seem to fit the profile; I don't even have a laptop, as I don't see the need, all my uses would be filled by a device like the iPad. But really, it is a bit pricey for me, starting at $630… if like the US price it was $Aus500, maybe… and it only gets worse from there with 3G. My flat is openplan, and my Mac is central in the living room, it is directly connected to my stereo, so I only walk a few steps to look up the TV guide or play music etc, it would be pure laziness if I couldn't even manage to get out of my sofa. And outside you need 3G or a wireless hotspot for internet browsing. The real question then is how practical is it as an ebook reader, which is not ideal on a desktop or laptop PC, or how addictive are the games…

I agree. Unfortunately for me, I have trouble stomaching Windows, and Linux just isn't for me. But the iPad makes a point of not being like the previous tablets with a Desktop OS, and currently there is nothing else like it. It's an appliance with a specialised user-interface. That will come soon to other platforms, it's an arena even Linux could compete with the right spit and polish, where they've utterly failed on the Desktop, if someone will provide the vertical integration to an App Store, like maybe Google…
