Spore

In a rather peculiar, yet potentially genius move, the creators of Spore – EA have allowed those who’ve pre-ordered the game download 99% of the title today.

If your thinking you’ll be able to jump in and start playing you’ll be sadly disappointed. The idea behind this is not to release the game early, but to reduce the server strain on launch day.

With Spore being one of the most anticipated upcoming titles, launch day is sure to be crazy, and the EA servers are sure to be loaded. With a lot of the burden offloaded prior to launch day, will allow EA to deliver only the final (most important) 1% of the game to the mass of enthusiast who want the game on launch day.

This is an interesting idea, we’ll have to wait and see if it pays off on launch day. Let’s hope EA doesn’t fall foul to those cloud demons that so many others have struggled with this year.
