As previously mentioned, there are more models to come (pictured above is the 15.6-inch model), with 14- and 17-inch models on the way. As noted in the previous article, Dell’s PR have confirmed that the thin and light laptop is headed for Australia, on the same day as the American release!

Dell are tipped to release an ultra-thin 15.6" laptop which is…affordable? According to CNET’s sources, the new laptop will pack Intel’s ‘Sandy Bridge’ Core i5 and i7 processors, making the laptop not sluggish, which has been a complaint with previous ultra-thin laptops (such as the Macbook Air). Dell is aiming the product at the ‘prosumer’ market – a segment which involves professional-grade performance, mixed with style for the consumer side. Also rumoured is the sub-$1000USD pricetag, which is a good sign that we are finally heading towards a more affordable ultra-thin laptop market. Exciting!

Unlike the Adamo, which was discontinued after barely making a real splash in the market, Dell has promised that ‘this is not a one-time product. This is a full commitment to a product category that is focused on thin and powerful.’ Engadget noted that Dell blogger Lionel Mencacha confirmed that Dell are working on the 15.6" laptop, and that there are ‘more models to come.’ Here’s hoping that Dell finally release a solid, sleek looking performer in the ultra-thin market as they have promised, and one that’ll stick around for a while. Hopefully Dell’s machine will come to Australia, but don’t get your hopes up just yet.

Update
Dell PR have confirmed this laptop will arrive in Australia and New Zealand on launch day ! That’s fantastic news.. now we just need to know local pricing.

Dell have announced a partnerships with Optus to sell the Dell Stream in Australia from October 1st. The Streak will go on sale for $0 upfront on a $59 cap or those looking for more freedom can buy it outright for A$649.

Dell are calling the Streak a 5 inch tablet, but that seems to be more of a marketing effort to cash in on the tablet hype rather than it being an actual tablet offering. The size seems a little awkward its really a massive smart phone. Dell say the Streak’s size hits a sweet spot with a “spacious 5-inch screen is ideal for experiencing thousands of Android Market widgets, games and applications, all without squinting or compromising portability”.

Unfortunately the Dell Streak will launch running Android 1.6 (Donut) with Dell user interface enhancements, but will get an over the air update to Android 2.2 (Froyo) later this year. At that stage the Streak will support Adobe Flash 10.1, something not many other devices can. What that experience is actually like, remains to be seen, only time will tell.

The Dell Streak is powered by Qualcomm’s 1GHz Snapdragon processor and while the battery is replaceable, there’s no word on how much life users can expect. With a 5 inch screen, and running an old version of android, it’d be smart to keep a charged second battery close by.

After posting a couple years back about a bad customer service story with Dell, I felt it was important to also write about a good experience I’ve recently had. Blogs are often criticised for simply being a platform to complain, I’d like to disprove that theory now.

Around a year and a half ago I purchased 2x 27” monitors. Recently I’d noticed one of them began flickering. This was more pronounced with a white, or light application background. Using different connections didn’t help, dropping back to a single input didn’t help, neither did grabbing the latest drivers from Nvidia.

Out of options I needed support. Dell support. Using the power of social networking I posted the following tweet.

To which I received the following response.

I sent off the service tag, my name and email address. A couple of hours later I received a call from Dell support. I ran him through the situation, a couple of minutes later, he said, “we’re going to replace it”. 3 days later I had my replacement monitor. I place the broken monitor back in the box, and send it back to Dell, all shipping paid for.

It’s been one of my most pleasant experiences with customer service I’ve ever had. Does this mean that they’ll get it right 100% of the time ? No of course not, what it does show, is that Dell are paying attention to what customers are saying. One of the best examples of a business using social media to help their customers. If you have a problem with a Dell product, consider using twitter.

Taking a browse around Dell’s website I noticed they’ve got a massive discount on their super sexy 22” display. When they first arrived I was always impressed with such a unique display design, but the price was the just to steep.

If you’ve always wanted one but didn’t want to stretch to that crazy high $1000 price, then now might be the time to pull the trigger. Until this Thursday (27th August 2009), you can get one for $499.

Whilst that is still a lot for a 22” monitor, this is really designed for people who prioritise design over the value and are happy to pay a premium. If that doesn’t sound like you, maybe you’d be better to invest in a larger monitor for the same price.

This supports a growing trend for sub-10″ laptops, with multiple companies getting in on the trend. Both Asus with the Eee PC and HP with their Mini-note, already have products in the market.

Specific details are still to be released, so we wait for an official Dell press release on a release date and price. If Dell can get mass production costs low-enough through, could see the mini Inspiron dominate the UMPC market.
