iPhone OS 3.1.3 released, fixes bugs

Posted on: 3/Feb/10

As well as the iTunes update, we also got an update to the iPhone OS overnight. Not the 3.2 firmware running on the iPad, but rather a small point release to version 3.1.3. As expected.. bug fixes are essentially all that’s here.

Fixes include:

• Improves accuracy of reported battery level on
   iPhone 3GS
• Resolves issue where third-party apps would not
   launch in some instances
• Fixes bug that may cause an app to crash when
   using the Japanese Kana keyboard

Products compatible with this software update:
• iPhone (all models)
• iPod touch (all models)

Facebook iPhone app pushes to 3.1

Posted on: 7/Jan/10

iPhone 014 iPhone 015 iPhone 016

Overnight one of the most heavily used iPhone apps – Facebook was updated. Version 3.1 now includes push notifications and contact sync.

Push Notifications – This solves the annoying problem of having to launch the app just to see if there are any new updates. Those popular people who get tonnes of updates may wanna turn this off, it’ll get annoying pretty quickly. But if your one of those ADD kids who have to stay on top of everything at every second, then this is a great new feature.

Contact Sync – Like many people I sync my iPhone’s contacts with gmail. There’s a lot of crossover between that list of contacts and my friends on Facebook. The new Facebook contact sync, works as you’d expect. Combining data from fracebook into your contact list. If you don’t have a picture for your contact, it’ll pull from your friend’s current Facebook profile photo, it’ll also add a website link into your contact which works in a unique way. The link is a specially formatted URL e.g. fb://profile/profilenumber – Pressing on this link doesn’t launch Safari, but rather the Facebook app, directly to the profile page of the associated friend. Very cool indeed.

Facebook v3.1 iPhone app is available from the app store now. Note: I didn’t see listed as an update, had to search Facebook in the App Store.

Organising Apps just got easy – iPhone

Posted on: 10/Sep/09

The latest iTunes includes some great new features, one of my favourites is the new Application Sync page. It allows drag and drop positioning of your applications, so you decide and control the page and position in which your apps appear. After syncing any changes are updated on the device.

It’s amazing how similar this is to the leaked video we seen a month or two ago.

Qik now available for 3GS, only supports Wifi.. for now!

Update: Jackie Danicki, Marketing director of Qik, says there’s already an update to the Qik app submitted to Apple that would enable live streaming over 3G. That’s great news, Apple better let this one through or the tag #AppleFAIL will become very popular.

The smash hit video streaming mobile application Qik has had an ongoing battle with Apple and the App Store for approval.

I have in the past jailbroken my iPhone 3G with the sole aim of using Qik. I love the application, big props to the guys who made it.

One of the benefits of the original version is that it worked on iPhone 3G and could stream over 3G or even 2G (although not exactly watchable). Unfortunately Qik had to dissable live streaming over the cell network to have it approved in the App Store.

You can however still record your video anywhere and upload it once you get back to a Wifi connection. There’s already a tone of apps that do this and allow you to post to twitter, facebook or youtube.

The strength of Qik was its ability to stream live from anywhere. Also it’s only available to iPhone 3GS users.

Anyways, check it out [iTunes link].

Revision 3 launch yet another new show – App Judgement

Posted on: 10/Aug/09

Sure the iPhone app store started the mainstream trend, but almost every mobile platform now has an app store.

Despite this the first episode seems very heavily weighted towards iPhone apps. Not too surprising given it’s popularity.

Patrick Norton’s the host of AppJudgement, and while I usually like Patricks work (like on DL.TV back in the day or HDNation), but this show could really have used a fresh host. Sorry Patrick.

Anyway, if your after mobile app reviews, without spending the money to try them out, check out App Judgement on Revision 3.

Update: Episode 2 is now out and features David Prager as the host, so perhaps we’ll see a rotating roster.
