Congratulations Apple, you’ve discovered live streaming
Tomorrow morning will be an early start with Apple’s latest PR event, this time relating to iPods. Each time this year Apple announce updates to their line-up of their insanely successful iPods. Fierce speculation online points to not only an iPod touch in the iPhone 4 style, but also an update and rebranding of Apple TV.
Living outside the US, means that a typical Apple event involves watching countless live blogs competing for the best coverage. Sure there’s times where some audio or even video streams leak out, but typically its something Apple has mandated is NOT allowed.
Well after years of insanity, Apple have finally announced they will stream tomorrow’s event live online. Apple have always filmed the events and posted them online afterwards, but by that point all relevant news has already spread across the internets.
Apple® will broadcast its September 1 event online using Apple’s industry-leading HTTP Live Streaming, which is based on open standards. Viewing requires either a Mac® running Safari® on Mac OS® X version 10.6 Snow Leopard®, an iPhone® or iPod touch® running iOS 3.0 or higher, or an iPad™. The live broadcast will begin at 10:00 a.m. PDT on September 1, 2010 at www.apple.com
I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome Apple to the 21st century. Other companies like Google and Microsoft have streamed their big events live for years. That said we all know Apple fans are like no other, so despite forward planning it’ll be interesting to see if Apple’s servers melt or can sustain the punishment.
So is this the death of the Apple event liveblog ? Absolutely not. There’s still score for interpretation of the announcements that arrive tomorrow, so MacWorld, GDGT, Engadget and TWiT and plenty more will still be running live coverage.
All the action starts at 3AM AEST, so if your a keen tech enthusiast set your alarm, if not, be sure to check techAU tomorrow for a summary.

Tech furniture finally here, iPod couch
Gadgets are part of everyday life, from mobile phones, to portable gaming to netbooks and laptops, they’re everywhere. One common place we use our technology is in the lounge room, so it makes sense the other elements of a lounge evolve to support modern-day tech.
Luxury furniture provider Danish Inspirations is selling a couch titled Surround by Natuzzi. The couch features an iPod / iPhone doc not only charges your device, but can also play tunes view an in-built speaker in the couch.
Whilst we make all the effort in the world to hide the mass of cables that make up a home entertainment setup, inevitably the couch ends up being littered with charging and USB cables. This couch offers a neat solution to the problem, but this is potentially just the start. Imagine if your couch was wired so you could simply insert a USB thumbdrive or SD card and watch that content on your TV. Even better, would be a way to (safely) hide your laptop charger in your couch, with a retractable cable.
Keep in mind upcoming iPad / Slate war, these devices are perfectly suited to be used on the couch, so why not have your couch support it. What about a pocket in the side of the couch for the iPad or Slate, or maybe that wireless keyboard for your gaming console or set-top box.
Could furniture become a new tech category ? I sure hope so.

iPhone OS 3.1.3 released, fixes bugs
As well as the iTunes update, we also got an update to the iPhone OS overnight. Not the 3.2 firmware running on the iPad, but rather a small point release to version 3.1.3. As expected.. bug fixes are essentially all that’s here.
Fixes include:
• Improves accuracy of reported battery level on
iPhone 3GS
• Resolves issue where third-party apps would not
launch in some instances
• Fixes bug that may cause an app to crash when
using the Japanese Kana keyboard
Products compatible with this software update:
• iPhone (all models)
• iPod touch (all models)

Organising Apps just got easy – iPhone
The latest iTunes includes some great new features, one of my favourites is the new Application Sync page. It allows drag and drop positioning of your applications, so you decide and control the page and position in which your apps appear. After syncing any changes are updated on the device.
It’s amazing how similar this is to the leaked video we seen a month or two ago.
