Over the past few months I’ve had a number of friends contact me after their hard drive died. The dead hard drives usual contain their precious photos and or videos. I asked “do you have a backup”, knowing the answer was likely to be no. It was.

That served for a huge reminder to ensure I had a solid backup solution in place. My storage continues to grow, the space required for the raw + edited files for the podcast is growing at around 5-10GB per episode.

I have a 500GB drive in my PC plus an 80GB drive in the laptop, both that need backing up, as well as planning future expansion.

I previously had a 300GB external drive that became unreliable, so I’ve been searching for a good backup solution at a reasonable cost for some time now.

My first prefernce for backup would be the HP MediaSmart Server, however we’re still waiting for an Australian release. I couldn’t wait any longer.

I opted for the Western Digital 1TB My Book. Previous models combined 2x500GB drives to achieve the 1TB size, however the new design does this with a single drive and super shiny black glossy finish. So with that, my PC and laptop backups (for now) are sorted.

If your not currently running any type of backups, I strongly suggest you do, hard drives will at some point, fail.

Update
I got the 1TB Western Digital My Book on special, it cost me AU $298.
