Telstra to sell iPhone 3G, misses launch day, aims for July 22

Australian IT are reporting that Telstra and Apple have finally come to an arrangement, allowing Telstra to offer to also carry the iPhone 3G in Australia. While an exact date is still being sought, they’ve indicated July 22nd is the date they’re aiming for.

Telstra has missed a massive opportunity by missing the July 11th launch date, Optus and Vodafone will both attract the early adopters and capitalise on the hype surrounding the Australian launch.

Many were surprised at Telstra’s silence surrounding the new device, being the largest network provider in Australia it’s a natural fit for Apple’s strategy to move large numbers.

Apple still aren’t listing Telstra on their ‘where to buy’ page.

Wow this whole iPhone in Australia thing has been such a mess so far. I hope the telcos have their stories straight by the time it gets released. I think the reason no one has released any pricing yet is that they don't know yet. Each company waiting to see what the others will do. Its a stalemate. Next: 3 Mobile.

I agree, although someone has to go first. I don't think consumers have ever been more conscious of data rates / plans than right now, so it's a great opportunity for companies to get it right.

No doubt the iPhone will become the highest used mobile browsing platform in Aus, like it has in the US.

I'm sincerely hoping for a carrier pricing bloodbath – the lowest price is going to win the day and everybody is waiting for someone else to make a move. Its a frustrating wait, but waiting even a little longer after launch would probably be prudent.

I'm looking forward to three making an announcement, they have 3G coverage in my area and are the most reckless as far as pricing is concerned.

Whilst I'd love to be on the NextG network – Telstra's pricing is never competitive, so I'm not holding my breath.

The next question, how will Apple be able supply all these handsets?
