NBN Australian Government

In what can only be described as shocking, the whole NBN process has been scrapped in favor of a government-built National Broadband Network.

- The NBN will provide FFTH for 90% of Australians.
- Create 37,000 jobs.
- Provide speeds of up to 100Mbps .
- Government will spend $43 billion over 8 years.

Update
The NBN will begin construction in Tasmania, mid year and take around 8 years to complete.

As always, all the latest information is on the twitters – http://search.twitter.com/search?q=NBN

Stephen Conroy’s official press release about the announcement.

All I can think of with my tinfoil hat on, is what secret things will be tapped onto the NBN that will allow them to monitor traffic?

Definitely an interesting concept, and obviously there's pro's and con's to the government owning the network…..particularly when we're talking about net censorship.

I do however prefer the government to own the infrastructure, as long as we dont see another Telstra style sell off in 20 years time and end up with a monopolistic company who screws everyone..

I guess it's a case of 'watch this space' for now.

It's definitely a case of wait and see. As per usual the devil can be in the detail.

The Up to 100Mb will be interesting to watch. As will the challenge of getting Fibre to the Home. Does this mean they'll be climbing through pits, digging up roads etc ?

I'd like to see the government publish (as soon as possible) the timeframe of which areas will be done when.

  • Adam

Hopefully they release a white paper on their plans and contingency plans for changes of Govtments ect
Obviously its early days yet and if all goes to plan a big change, but by the time everyone gets access will it still be behind the ball? I think it will be atleast 5 years before we can make use of it anywhere.

So along with the faster connectivity to our homes, does this mean the ISPs get an upgrade to? Don't they already have fibre in? The only thing i'm worried about is the fact that i could chew through my usage limit 100x quicker! Oh and will prices come down? and bandwidth go up? we can only hope! No doubt the government will tax the shit out of it to.
