10 minutes with Windows Phone 7 simulator unlocked [video]

Posted on: 19/Mar/10

Many of us who tried out the Windows Phone 7 simulator were disappointed to discover the simulator didn’t contain a lot of the functionality that was being shown off at Mix10. It turns out Dan Ardelean has published a modified or ‘unlocked’ version of the simulator that contains virtually everything that was displayed. The front page is now full of apps that work, the settings menu is a long list of options for those apps.

Unfortunately the download of the .bin file has now been pulled, but I was lucky enough to get a copy. Check out the 10 minute video of Windows Phone 7.

Update
I’ve also spent some time going through all the settings screens. Check out the 2nd video for all the details.

Update 2
Ina Fried from cnet spoke to Microsoft about the unlock and got the following response, saying that they expected this to happen.

We are extremely pleased with the level of excitement we’re seeing for Windows Phone Developer Tools. When we decided to provide a Windows Phone 7 Series Emulator as part of the tools, we anticipated that people would attempt to unlock and explore the code. We have been very clear that the emulator is based on early code and is not reflective of the final user experience. Windows Phone 7 Series is still under development. The UI has been disabled to avoid confusion and allow developers to focus on testing applications on the underlying platform. We continue to recommend that developers use the emulator as provided to avoid any issues and unpredictability that may be introduced by an unlocked version."

Update 3
Dan has posted the Windows Phone 7 unlock ‘How to’ now.

The graphic design is nice, but UI interactions are totally stolen from the iPhone. It's really unbelievable how shamelessly they've ripped off the iPhone, even down to little things like disappearing scroll bars, the airplane mode toggle switch, the keyboard layout, password entry showing the last character typed, plus at least a hundred other details. I really wish they would have put some thought into how to accomplish these tasks in their own way. I guess it's easier to copy than to re-think. This is why we have the patent system folks.
  • If round wheels work, no one is going to use square wheels. Some things that i-Phone does probably are the best way to do it. Why should some other device not do that same thing if it is the thing that makes sense to do? Having said that I'm not making any claims one way or another about who has copied who... as you said that's up the the lawyers.
  • if it's just copying the iPhone then there will be no reason for anyone to buy it. Of course if you really know anything about this phone you would have realized it's totally different than the iPhone. I have an iPhone and I can't wait to upgrade to this.

I hope you changed your password after that...
  • My Password has been changed. In the rush to post this I didn't double check that I'd removed that section of the video. Attempts were made on my hotmail and facebook account. Lesson learned.

Nice videos. I wish there was a streaming bar in the player though, so I could go back or forwards to screens I was more interested in.

The camera-capturing interface looks somewhat ugly :( There were also spots in the interface where it seemed the text was too squashed, or too many box elements, that I wish could be better polished. I know there's still months before it goes, but I hope they add further polish.

How do you access the lock screen?
  • Couldn't agree more. The best features around WinMo is customization. I can make my phone look any way I want, install any apps I want, and run them in the background when I want.
It looks like MS is creating an environment which will hopefully lead to the end user being able to use these phoens easily without any hassle. Reactions: http://bit.ly/winphone7-marketplace-examined
  • To get to the lock screen, you need to go in to the Settings menu, then select Phone Lock. Then set a Wallpaper and a Screen Timeout duration. Then just wait.

You screen will go black, click it and you'll see the lock screen.
  • I'll check tomorrow, but pretty sure I held down the home button. Either that or double tapped. Like I said, will confirm tomorrow.
  • It turns out this post has become one of the most popular ever on techAU after being picked up by Engadget and now many other sites. I took some time to give my thoughts on the the exciting events of tonight.
